Boondocking — free, dispersed camping on public land — is one of the best perks of vanlife. And Colorado is loaded with incredible spots within striking distance of Denver. Here are five of our favorites.

Always follow Leave No Trace principles. Pack it in, pack it out.

1. Guanella Pass — Georgetown (60 min from Denver)

Just off I-70, Guanella Pass offers dispersed camping along the road between Georgetown and Grant. Surrounded by aspens, with views of Mount Bierstadt. Spots fill up on weekends — arrive early Friday.

Best for: Quick overnight, 14er staging, fall colors. Elevation: 9,000–11,600 ft.

2. Kenosha Pass — Jefferson (90 min from Denver)

Take US-285 south to one of the best aspen groves in Colorado. Dispersed camping lines both sides of the road. In September, the fall colors here are legendary.

Best for: Fall camping, photography. Elevation: 10,000 ft.

3. Lefthand Canyon — Boulder (50 min from Denver)

Head up Lefthand Canyon Drive from Boulder into Roosevelt National Forest. A go-to for Front Range locals who want to escape for a night without the long drive.

Best for: Quick getaway, stargazing. Elevation: 7,500–9,000 ft.

4. Webster Pass Road — Montezuma (90 min from Denver)

Near Keystone, this forest road has multiple dispersed pull-offs with incredible views. Pick a spot, park, and enjoy alpine meadows without a soul around.

Best for: Solitude, alpine scenery. Elevation: 10,000–11,000 ft.

5. Rampart Range Road — Woodland Park (90 min from Denver)

This dirt road runs along the Front Range with dozens of dispersed spots. Well-maintained and VanGoat-friendly. Great for easy access without venturing too far into the backcountry.

Best for: Families, easy access, Pikes Peak views. Elevation: 8,000–9,500 ft.

Boondocking Tips for VanGoat

• Water: You have 20 gallons — enough for 2–3 days if you're conservative.

• Power: Solar panel keeps the battery charged. Use USB fans at night to conserve.

• Toilet: The cassette toilet means you're fully self-contained.

• Fire: Use the Ignik firepit we provide. Propane-powered, leaves no trace.
